Free time can be utilized in many different ways. Many people go out with friends, read a book, clean the house, do sports or just lie lazily. Some people prefer to tinker something - men mostly cars or technical gear. Women are the ones who have shown more sense for aesthetics and they are somehow more prone to create something beautiful and graceful.

For some time there has been a revival of various techniques (a revival because they are not new, but simply forgotten for some time), giving everyone the opportunity to develop their creative talents to unleash their imagination and to create really beautiful things. Quilling, patchwork, decoupage, origami and many more invaded what little free time more creative people have today. Why and how - especially in Quilling - will be explained in the following lines.

Then taped together to achieve a pre-conceived vision - flower, animal jewelry, decoration cards, frames and so on. It is also called as 'paper filigree' on its similarity to jewelery technique for making fine articles of thin copper, gold or silver threads like lace.

History

It is always difficult to say precisely where, how and when an art appears , but it is currently estimated that the creation of decorations with paper spirals occurred in the XIV century in Europe. At that time the nuns in medieval monasteries began to create various decorations using a quill, which twisted paper. So they made decorations for the cover of the church books, frames for text or brooches. For a short time this activity spread so much that at the end of the XV century was now considered an art. During the XVIII and XIX century it became even elitist pastime and practiced mainly by aristocratic and noble ladies. For unknown reasons to us in the next twentieth century Quilling sank into oblivion. This lasts until the end of the century, when he was revived as an art and has become a major hobby for many people across Europe. Became particularly popular in Germany and England. It is known that Queen Elizabeth was also very fond of this art and spent a lot of time dealing with it.

What is up with Quilling

With Quilling are created separate items - postcards, paintings, jewelry, and additions to existing as well as decorations - they can be decorations for cards, gifts, boxes, picture frames, albums and so on. Possibilities and interpretations in this art are so great that it depends entirely on the imagination of the person what will be created.

What do we need to Quilling

First of all - paper. It is a paper art after all. One nice thing about Quilling is that the practice doesn't need a special expensive equipment. To create a variety of beauty you need mostly paper that meets certain conditions. Above all, the most important thing is its density - it must be at least 60 grams per square meter. This will determine whether you will be able to shrink it without a problem. Another condition is the color - it should be bilateral, ie on both sides of the paper, unless you are looking for some other specific effects. When you choose the right paper, you have to cut into strips with a width of 1 to 9 mm. If you do not waste time in making the tapes, you can buy premade ones - they are now available in many stores. Besides paper, you will need an awl,  whose spiral body is for wounding paper, glue, which is for gluing the different parts and tweezers with which to grip the created ornaments while gluing and sticking the different parts, cartons or other items and objects . Some people find it convenient to use a brush for applying the glue. If you are creating a Quilling picture, you will also need a solid color card for base.
